Personal Sacred Objects
As an artist I am greatly intrigued by the phenomena of personal sacred objects used in our post-modern times and to explore it from a painter’s perspective.
Personal sacred objects are still used in contemporary western culture. Although in many cases the method of acquiring these objects is similar to that of the past – for example, religious icons- some personal sacred objects are often ready-mades for mass production. These objects do not seem to derive their value from a market price, their beauty or rarity- their significance to their owners arises from a unique or unusual appearance or form the context of the object’s discovery. The objects are subsequently invested with private personal meaning, by their owners, which provide a psychological space of empowerment in a complex and uncertain world.
